HOW DOES THE SPIKE OF XENOPHOBIA AFFECT ASIAN COMMUNITY?

Xenophobia is harmful and unfair to others. This occurs when people have fears and hatred towards other communities resulting in violence leaving others injured. This has increased during the coronavirus and is affecting different communities.

Asian population is more affected by this as people in western countries blame them for causing the coronavirus to spread. This is not the case. There have been many cases of xenophobia in western countries and it leaves thousands of people to be severely hurt but it also traumatises them. It can even make them feel unsafe in the country.

For instance, there’s been cases in some countries. A Vietnamese American in Philadelphia was encountered by a man who yelled the inappropriate word “"get out of here, you caused coronavirus". This did not affect him however he faced the same situation but he was spat on as the man walked past him in March. Some physical attacks appeared such as a glass bottle being thrown at a woman while buckling her child’s seatbelt and yelled “go home ch**k”. On March 16, Eugenie Grey was walking her dog and was body slammed by a stranger. The stranger also kicked the dog which howled in pain. Besides physical attacks, verbal attacks affect Asians as well. Jay Koo was encountered by men calling him “You got the virus. We have to kill you”.

Some of these attacks may have been influenced by Donald Trumps racist comments on the coronavirus. He has been using the term “Chinese virus” and “Kung flu” which may have been causing the spike of xenophobia and racism comments. He even stated “I talk about the Chinese virus and — and I mean it. That’s where it came from” which further shows the spark of the xenophobia. This shows Trump is referring to Chinese people as the “cause” for this coronavirus situation.

A 23 year old, Jonathan Mock from Singapore, was attacked while walking down Oxford Street in London. He encountered 4 men saying ““we don’t want your coronavirus in our country” then punched and kicked him. Because of this, he may need an operation to fix his broken bones. Another situation was Vietnamese art curator was not accepted by the exhibitor as she thought the art curator was carrying of the virus.

These are examples of xenophobia and racisms that are occurring present during the coronavirus. It should be stopped and the government needs to educate people about these actions as Asians are getting harmed and affected as 1,710 incidents were reported to STOP AAPI HATE. Thousands are getting hurt from these incidents and it needs to be stopped for them to feel safe without being feared. They are not the cause of this virus and it is wrong for people treating them with violence.
